What do I need to do before the first day of camp? After you register and send your money in by check or pay online by credit card, you will need to complete several forms before the first day of camp. You will need to sign the disclaimer of liability if you are 18 years of age or older; or if you are under the age of 18, then your parent will need to sign it. Also you will need to have a current sports physical that has been performed within the past year. If you have not had a sports physical recently, you can download a physical form and have it filled out by a physician of your choice. There are also some opportunities to have a free physical performed by one of our physicians. Contact me for further details. Participation in the camp will not be allowed until both the liability release form and the sports physicals are received.
What type of shoes should I wear? We recommend that you wear shoes with good support such as tennis or all-court shoes. Running shoes are not recommended because they are less stable and can result in ankle sprains during cutting activities. In addition to your tennis shoe, you will want to bring turf shoes (if you own some) as some of the running drills will be performed on artificial turf.
What is a typical day of training like? Each day will be different and every week will emphasize a different component of speed. We will always start with a dynamic warm up to prepare for the day's activities. From there we will train a different aspect of speed—starting speed, stopping speed, acceleration speed, change of direction speed, top end speed, speed endurance, etc. Frequently we will utilize agility ladders to improve foot speed, coordination, and agility; and plyometric drills to improve power and first step quickness. Resistive belts will be used to help develop speed strength and improve acceleration mechanics. Medicine balls will be used to help develop total body strength and explosiveness. During the first few weeks, more time will be devoted to improving and perfecting your running mechanics. During the following weeks, the intensity of the drills will increase and we will incorporate your newly learned techniques and skills in more sport specific and chaotic situations.
What if I am unable to attend all of the sessions? You can still participate but the more sessions that you attend the better athlete you will become. As the saying goes, the more effort you put into something, the more that you will get out of it. Performance testing will occur only on the first and last days of camp, so it very important to attend those days if you want feedback on your improvement.
Where is the camp being held? The camp is being held at Asheville High School on the football field, baseball field, and also on the track. In case of inclement weather, the camp will be held on the second floor of the old gymnasium. The old gym is located at the entrance gate on the south side of campus (besides the baseball field). On the first day of camp, we will show where this is located so you know where to go in case of rainy weather. Camp will never be cancelled because of rain because we will always have the option to train indoors.
